Hand in hand, the UAE marks 50 years of Emirati women’s achievement, resilience, and leadership on Emirati Women’s Day 2025, honoring those who have shaped the nation’s past, drive its present and are steering its future.

Under the theme ‘Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years‘, this year’s Emirati Women’s Day honors the five-decade journey of the General Women’s Union (GWU), founded in 1975, and shines a spotlight on the nation’s Year of Community.

The initiative pioneered by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, has grown into a powerful national movement that places Emirati women at the very heart of the UAE’s success story.

Every year, Emirati Women’s Day is commemorated on August 28, marking the founding of the General Women’s Union (GWU) and honoring the remarkable achievements, unwavering dedication, and enduring resilience of women across the Emirates, whose contributions continue to shape the nation’s progress and inspire future generations.

From boardrooms to space missions, and from scientific labs to international diplomatic arenas, their influence today stretches far beyond borders, embodying ambition, innovation and the relentless pursuit of progress.

From sand to stars: The success journey of Emirati women

The story of Emirati women is woven into the very fabric of the nation. Long before skyscrapers dotted the skyline, women were the quiet powerhouses of community life. They managed homes while men sailed for pearling seasons, wove Sadu embroidery that became a symbol of identity, and ensured stability during the birth of the Union.

Fast forward fifty years, and Emirati women are no longer just behind the scenes, they are at the forefront of government, business, and innovation. They now make up half of the Federal National Council, lead 26 percent of ministerial portfolios, and hold 63 percent of senior roles in the federal government. In business, Emirati women are making a powerful impact.

From reflection to celebrations

Festivities for this year’s celebration promise both glamour and substance. Expo City Dubai’s Women’s Pavilion will be the beating heart of the celebrations, hosting exhibitions and panels that showcase women’s leadership in science, politics, and entrepreneurship.

The Abaya Rally will turn tradition into a moving spectacle, while across Dubai and beyond, brunches, spa retreats, and cultural showcases will transform the day into an experience of pride and joy.

Seminars and workshops at Emirati Women’s Day celebrations will offer a platform to showcase how Emirati women are shaping the UAE’s future in innovation, technology, and global leadership.
