The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has hosted the Young Generation Network (YGN) of the Nuclear Institute of the United Kingdom for a technical visit focused on the UAE’s nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness framework.

The engagement marks the first visit of its kind and underscores the growing international interest in the UAE’s regulatory model.

The program introduced the delegation to FANR’s mandate as the UAE’s independent nuclear regulator, charged with protecting the public and the environment.

The sessions outlined FANR’s responsibilities in nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response, the structure of the national emergency framework, and the regulatory tools, systems, and operational functions that support timely and informed decision-making during emergencies.

The delegation also toured FANR’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), where they were briefed on its nuclear assessment, radiological monitoring, and crisis communication capabilities.

The EOC serves as a central coordination hub, enabling FANR to align response activities with national stakeholders and international partners, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), during nuclear and radiological incidents.

“Engaging with the next generation of nuclear professionals is essential to sharing the UAE’s experience in nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector, both locally and globally.”

Active for more than 25 years, the Young Generation Network comprises over 2,000 members and supports early-career professionals by promoting communication, collaboration, and professional development across the nuclear industry in the UK and internationally.

FANR’s Emergency Operations Centre, inaugurated in 2019, plays a pivotal role in national nuclear and radiological emergency exercises and drills.

It has also hosted major international initiatives, including the IAEA’s ConvEx-3 exercise, which involved 75 member states and 12 international organizations, as well as multiple nuclear emergency review missions.
