Najran University has secured a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The university said that the patent covers an innovative scientific methodology for extracting keratin protein from wool and other natural fibers through a sustainable and highly efficient process using environmentally friendly, recyclable ionic liquids combined with ultrasonic technology.

The method eliminates the need for external heating, preserving the protein’s integrity and physical properties while producing keratin with high thermal stability, making it particularly suitable for biomedical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications.

The Najran University further noted that this innovation reinforces the principles of sustainability and the circular economy by converting natural materials into high-value industrial resources through environmentally friendly methods.

In addition to this achievement, Najran University also secured another USPTO patent in August 2025 for an innovative medical AI system that provides an advanced method for assessing and monitoring patients’ levels of consciousness.

Designed for comatose patients, the system leverages AI and computer vision to assess eye movements, sensory responses, and audio reactions. It automatically analyzes these indicators and accurately correlates them with the Glasgow Coma Scale, offering real-time evaluations of the patient’s neurological condition.

Furthermore, Najran University continues to uphold high standards of operational excellence. Last year, Najran University successfully renewed its ISO 22301:2019 certification for its Business Continuity Management System in the field of information technology, following a successful international audit.

This achievement reflects the Deanship’s commitment to implementing the highest standards of quality and reliability in its technical and digital services, and ensuring business continuity under all circumstances.
