OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence (AI) research and deployment company behind ChatGPT, has announced its plan to unfold a more open generative AI model, marking a significant shift in the OpenAI’s strategy.

To date, OpenAI has defended its closed, proprietary models, claiming that limiting access to the core technology mitigates the risk of misuse by malicious actors. The new announcement comes as a part of the increasing competition in the open-source space from Chinese rival DeepSeek and Meta, each playing a crucial role in advancing open-source AI.

The rapid evolution and popularity of open AI models has made OpenAI to reconsider its strategy. As of 2025, the Chinese AI startup Deepseek has around 61.81 million monthly active users from around the world, challenging the dominance of ChatGPT by outperforming many existing models.

Former OpenAI investor Elon Musk has accused OpenAI for losing sight of its original mission and compelling the company to “reclaim its role as an open-source, safety-driven force for good.”

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, recently revealed that Llama has surpassed one billion downloads. This highlights the increasing demand for open models. On the other hand, DeepSeek’s R1 model, which rolled out in January, has attracted strong interest by providing a more budget-friendly alternative.

As the market is undergoing significant changes, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, revealed the company’s decision to change its strategy. The CEO posted on X that, “We’ve been thinking about this for a long time, but other priorities took precedence. Now it feels important to do.”
