The Qatar Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) has signed a strategic partnership program with the Korea Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), aiming to develop a national intellectual property strategy and enhance capacity building in the field.

The agreement was signed by MOCI Undersecretary Mohammed bin Hassan Al Malki and KIPO Commissioner Kim Wan Ki. A statement from MOCI confirmed that the signing follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on June 15, 2023, in Seoul. This MoU laid the foundation for bilateral cooperation between Qatar and South Korea in the field.

The newly signed program focuses on advancing Qatar’s intellectual property (IP) strategy and building institutional and human capacities in this area. It also aims to support the growth of an innovation-based economy in Qatar while improving the relevant legislative and regulatory frameworks.

Through this program, the two sides will collaborate on several key initiatives, with a primary focus on human resource development in the IP sector in Qatar. This includes providing training and capacity-building opportunities to enhance the skills of local professionals and strengthen the overall IP ecosystem.

Additionally, they will conduct comprehensive assessments to identify areas for development within Qatar’s intellectual property framework, comparing these with global best practices to ensure alignment with international standards.

The program will also facilitate consultations with a wide range of stakeholders, including government entities, businesses, and academic institutions, to assess Qatar’s specific needs and develop tailored IP systems that are best suited to its unique economic and legal landscape.

Additionally, the program will facilitate knowledge transfer from South Korea to Qatar, bolstering the effectiveness of local teams in intellectual property management. The two sides will continuously monitor the implementation of the program and evaluate its outcomes, ensuring the achievement of its objectives and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of intellectual property between the two countries.
