QatarEnergy has signed a 20-year Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with PETRONAS to supply Malaysia with two million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually, starting in 2028.

This marks the first long-term LNG SPA between QatarEnergy and Petronas, highlighting their mutual trust and shared commitment to a sustainable energy future and stronger bilateral cooperation.

The agreement was signed by Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President and CEO of QatarEnergy HE Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, and President Group CEO of PETRONAS YM Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Kamadjaja Aziz, during a special ceremony held in Doha on the sidelines of the 21st International Conference and Exhibition on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG2026).

HE Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi expressed QatarEnergy’s enthusiasm for the new LNG SPA with PETRONAS, emphasizing that the agreement demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to meeting Malaysia’s growing energy needs while serving customers worldwide.

Under the SPA, PLL will offtake up to two million tons per annum (MTPA) of LNG from QatarEnergy over a period of 20 years. The substantial long-term volumes secured through this agreement are expected to play a critical and strategic role in reinforcing Malaysia’s energy supply security, ensuring stable, reliable, and uninterrupted LNG availability to meet the country’s growing domestic and industrial energy demand.

This strategic collaboration further strengthens PETRONAS’ portfolio resilience amid an evolving and competitive global energy landscape, while actively supporting Malaysia’s economic development, energy diversification, and transition priorities.

“This agreement marks an important milestone for PETRONAS in bolstering energy security for those we serve. The supply of LNG through partnerships with industry leading partners such as QatarEnergy complements the cargoes from our LNG heartlands in Malaysia and Canada, diversifying our supply nodes even as PETRONAS unlocks new avenues to derive greater value and efficiency.”

The collaboration also underscores the shared vision and commitment of PETRONAS and QatarEnergy to deepen cooperation across the entire LNG value chain, advancing towards a future-ready, sustainable, and more environmentally responsible gas portfolio.

The agreement highlights the ongoing efforts of both parties and the strong foundation developed through years of collaboration, positioning the partnership to generate long-term value and drive tangible progress toward a more sustainable energy future.
