The Saudi Space Agency (SSA) has achieved major milestones in 2025 through strategic programs and initiatives that strengthened Saudi Arabia’s global position in space science and technology, advanced research and innovation, and built national capabilities in line with Saudi Vision 2030.

Building on the success of the Saudi astronauts’ mission, the ‘Saudi Towards Space’ initiative delivered 11 scientific papers and a patent, including a first-of-its-kind achievement to fabricate cartilage-repair nanomaterials in space.

The mission also enabled the first successful stem-cell transplantation and advanced gene-transfer experiments in space, supported by eight specialized workshops under the ‘BioGravity’ program, reinforcing the Kingdom’s leadership in advanced space research.

Innovation and the space economy

Saudi Space Agency has strengthened its global footprint in 2025 by launching the ‘SpaceUp’ competition with the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, offering $28 million in contracts and attracting over 690 participants from 50 countries across six technology tracks.

This was complemented by the global ‘DebriSolver’ competition, which drew more than 1,900 innovators from 40 countries, positioning Saudi Arabia as a hub for international collaboration in tackling space debris challenges.

To empower national talent and build human capital, Saudi Space Agency has delivered training programs and specialized seminars benefiting more than 900 participants through its academy. In parallel, 10 Arab scientific experiments were sent to the International Space Station under the ‘Space Madak’ competition.

Further strengthening this effort, two Saudi satellites designed by students from Umm Al-Qura University and Prince Sultan University were launched through the ‘SARI’ competition. Seven scientific workshops led by prominent scientists were also held to raise awareness of microgravity research and its scientific and medical applications, alongside the launch of the second edition of the ‘Space Madak’ competition across the Arab world.

In support of the nonprofit sector, Saudi Space Agency concluded the ‘Madar Impact’ Award, dedicated to empowering nonprofit organizations in the space field.

Community level initiatives

At the community level, Saudi Space Agency expanded its outreach by surpassing 50 million views for Arabic space science content and launching the ‘Knowledge Space Portal’, the first dedicated Arabic digital platform for space science awareness, which attracted more than 300,000 visitors within its first two weeks.

The agency also delivered a space-themed event under the ‘Diriyah Horizons’ program with the Diriyah Gate Development Authority, organized a symposium on the future of space and its national security implications with the National Defense University, and hosted an astronomical observation evening.

In addition, Saudi Space Agency has rolled out the national World Space Week awareness campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Saudi universities, engaging over 36,000 schools and universities nationwide. The ‘Abaad’ astrophotography competition also concluded, with nine winners announced.

International milestones by Saudi Space Agency

Internationally, Saudi Arabia reinforced its distinguished standing by winning three global awards at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in partnership with the Mawhiba Foundation and Neo Space Group.
