The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has issued a precautionary warning concerning specific batches of infant formula products manufactured by Nutricia-Danone under the Aptamil and Bebelac brands, following a voluntary notification submitted by the company.

According to the authority, the recall was initiated as a preventive measure after identifying the potential presence of Cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria, which may pose health risks to infants if consumed.

The SFDA confirmed that the action forms part of a voluntary precautionary recall undertaken in coordination with the manufacturer and follows a comprehensive risk assessment process.

The authority emphasized that safeguarding consumer health remains its highest priority and that immediate steps were taken to withdraw the affected batches from the Saudi market.

Potential Health Effects

The SFDA explained that exposure to Cereulide may result in symptoms appearing between 30 minutes and six hours after consumption. These symptoms can include nausea, repeated vomiting, and abdominal pain. The authority noted that such effects are typically short-term, generally resolving within 24 hours.

Importantly, the SFDA clarified that, to date, no cases of illness linked to the recalled products have been reported within the Kingdom.

Detailed information regarding the specific product names and batch numbers has been made available in an accompanying table to assist consumers and retailers.

The SFDA reaffirmed its continued commitment to rigorous food safety monitoring and strict enforcement of approved regulations to protect public health. It also urged citizens and residents to report any food-related violations or safety concerns through the SFDA Unified Call Center.

The authority emphasized that proactive coordination with manufacturers and swift regulatory intervention remain central to maintaining the highest standards of food safety across the kingdom.
